AP: Romania drafts legislation to outlaw gay marriage

A lawmaker says Romania's Parliament will vote on a law that would specify that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and refuse to recognize same-sex marriages or civil partnerships from other countries.

Daniel Buda, a deputy for the ruling Democratic Liberal Party, said Friday the law was needed because Romania is a Christian country with "Christian morals."

Some 85 percent of Romanians belong to the influential Orthodox Church.

Gay marriage is already banned in Romania but the proposed law goes one step further.Gay rights group ACCEPT told the Associated Press on Friday the law may breach Romania's agreements with other countries.

Parliament will vote on the law later this month.
