CHISINAU - Moldova has ordered the Romanian ambassador to leave the country within 24 hours, the Moldovan foreign ministry said on Wednesday after officials blamed Bucharest for bloody riots a day earlier.

Filip Teodorescu, plus the embassy's counsellor, were "declared persona non grata due to activities incompatible with their diplomatic status and must leave the country," a foreign ministry statement said.

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin on Wednesday accused neighbouring Romania of involvement in the anti-Communist riots that shook the capital Chisinau on Tuesday.

Romania late Wednesday designated a new envoy to Moldova: career diplomat Mihnea Constantinescu who also served as chief of staff to two former prime ministers.

However Bucharest has to wait for the green light from Chisinau before he takes up his post. --AFP
