AP:Romania supports Moldova's EU aspirations

CHISINAU, Moldova - Romania's foreign minister says his country supports Moldova's aspirations to join the European Union.

Cristian Diaconescu said Thursday that EU member Romania will help Moldova finalize an agreement with the bloc this year.

Moldova's Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan says that Moldova wants to strengthen ties with Romania to pave a path to signing a new agreement with the EU.

Diaconescu said Romania would like Moldova to have a special status within the EU. Romania joined the EU in 2007.

Moldova needs to implement democratic and economic reforms before it can sign a new agreement. Two-thirds of Moldovans are of Romanian descent.
