AP: Romanian interior minister loses job in party spat

BUCHAREST, Romania - Romania's interior minister has been fired because of a dispute with his party over the man he picked to be head of a domestic intelligence agency.

The Social Democrats say Gabriel Oprea deliberately broke party rules by appointing an official who was not on their shortlist for the post. Oprea had been in the post for less than a month.

Oprea's choice is considered to be close to President Traian Basescu who used to lead the centrist Democratic Liberal Party. The two parties formed a two party center-left coalition government after no single party won a majority in Nov. 30 elections.
