Romania: Political prisoner to get $380,000

Thursday, December 4, 2008

TIMISOARA, Romania: A former political prisoner's lawyer says his client will receive $380,000 in compensation for being imprisoned without trial and tortured under Romania's previous communist regime.

Vasile Cosma's lawyer Florin Kovacs says a court in this western city ruled last week that Cosma should receive $223 for every day spent in prison until his 1953 release.

Kovacs said Thursday that the decision represents "a moral and just retribution" for abuses committed against "a defenseless human being."

The 86-year-old Cosma says he was beaten after being imprisoned in December 1947 because the communists considered him dangerous.

Cosma was one of Romania's first paratroopers trained in espionage and sabotage.
