Romania: 7,000 railway workers to strike

Some 7,000 railway workers will strike for six hours to protest poor working conditions and a lack of investment. Gheorghe Popa, who heads the CFR railway trade union says the strike will start at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) Friday and run to 1 p.m. (1100 GMT).

Railway workers complain about working conditions and a lack of investment in the antiquated network. It takes five hours by train to reach the Black Sea coast from the capital, a journey just 140 miles long.

Railway officials said Tuesday that traffic will be disrupted all day Friday for the 250,000 people who use the network. Romania is facing a wave of strikes this month from teachers and other public sector workers over salary raises.
