Romania’s Budget Deficit Widens

Bucharest _ Romania registered a budget deficit of Lei 5.14 billion (€1.4 billion) in the first eight months of this year, representing around 1.02 per cent of GDP.

August's deficit was particularly large. After the first seven months this year the budget deficit stood at lei 3.061 billion or 0.61 per cent of GDP, according to data from the Economy and Finance Ministry.

While Romania posted high economic growth in recent years thanks to foreign investment and a consumer credit boom, experts, experts warn that budgetary discipline remains vital to ensure economic stability.
