06 October 2008 Bucharest _ The average net salary in Romania was down 2.4 percent in August 2008 compared to the previous month, according to the National Statistics Board.
August's average salary was Lei 1,277 (€355), up 24 percent compared to the same month a year earlier.
Earlier this month, parliament approved a 50 percent rise for teachers' wages, while Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu is opposing the move saying the 50 percent is not economically viable.
Romania - which faces a national election next month - has economic growth forecast at 9 percent this year. But the country also has inflation running at about 8 percent.
