01 August 2008 Bucharest _ Romania witnessed a marked increase in tourism during the first six months of 2008, data released on Friday by the country's National Statistics Institute, INS, shows.
Some 3.9 million foreigners visited Romania between January and June, up 31 per cent compared to the same period last year. Most of the visitors came from European Union countries.
A total of 7.9 million overnight stays were registered by the end of June this year, a slight increase of 0.3 per cent compared to the first six months of 2007.
The rising number of visitors is due to the increased quality of tourist services and facilities, but the standards are still low compared to Western European countries, experts from the industry say.
