Romania's Central Bank and financial analysts have repeatedly warned Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s centrist minority government, that keeping the rate of salary increases over levels of labour productivity could destabilise the economy and lead to a rise in inflation.

The Romanian unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in the last quarter of 2007, at a level close to the one in the previous quarter, but down from 7.2 percent in the last quarter of 2006, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics.
