09 April 2008 Bucharest _ Talks between trade union and management officials at the strike-hit Renault-owned Dacia car maker have broken down.
Management said they have offered workers a higher pay rise, in a bid to put an end to the strike that begin on March 24.
Thousands of workers are demanding higher wages of up to 50% and bonuses.
Dacia workers earn around 1,070 lei (€ 286) as basic salary on average a month, before tax. They are demanding a pay rise of 550 lei a month in 2008.
Trade unionists say wages are low given the productivity of the workforce and the profit that each employee generates.
Dacia sold more than 230,000 cars last year in Romania and abroad, a record, as Renault continues to invest about 200 million euros a year in the plant.
