Bucharest _ Romania’s local elections will be held on June 1, Romanian government spokeswoman Camelia Spataru said Wednesday.

The date was set following consultations with all parliamentary parties, Spataru added.

Previously, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu had argued he would not allow local elections to take place during the European Football Championships to be held between 7th and 29th June, arguing it would lead to a low turnout.

Local elections in June will be followed by elections to the national Parliament and the European Parliament later this year.
