Pakistan to open honorary consulate in northern Romania

ISLAMABAD, Aug 24 (APP): Pakistan will soon open an Honorary Consulate General in north-east region of Romania to promote business, culture and political understanding with the flourishing city of Iasi.

In a recent visit to the region which carries special place in the history of Romania, Ambassador Sanaullah discussed issues of mutual interest with the representatives of the government, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Iasi County and the city government.

In the region, he also visited nearby towns at the invitation of Parliamentarian Grigore Craciunescu to explore new avenues for promotion of Pakistan trade and the image of Pakistan, says a fax message received from Pakistan Embassy, Bucharest (Romania) here on Friday.

During his meetings with various personalities, Ambassador Sanaullah said that the Government of Pakistan had decided to appoint the Chief Executive and owner of the Omega-Tehnoton Group, Mr. Maricel Popa, as the Honorary Consul General of Pakistan in Iasi.

Through his appointment, Pakistan looked forward to making use of an additional instrument to promote cultural, social and economic linkages between the two countries.

The establishment of honorary Consul would be useful to protect not only the interests of Pakistani students resident in the region but also some Pakistani business companies which have already invested in the Iasi region.

Popa would soon approach the Chamber of Commerce and Industries in different counties in the region to plan a visit of businessmen to Pakistan from the northern part of Romania in October/November this year.

The official opening of the Honorary Consulate General is scheduled to take place on September 21 this year.

To mark the event, representatives of the Parliament, Romanian Senate and business community will be invited to the ceremony followed by a reception.

Popa has dedicated an independent building in a centre of the city to be used as the Honorary Consulate’s office where separate area has been earmarked for display of Pakistani products, pamphlets and brochures.

During press encounters in different cities, the Ambassador emphasized the strategic location of Pakistan and the growing opportunities which the mature economic market of Pakistan can offer to Romania.

Also the Honorary Consul General, Popa highlighted ready-made garment industry, raw-material, IT industry and import/export as promising sectors for collaboration between the two countries.
