Romania to shutdown another 88 mines

BUCHAREST, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The Romanian government decided to allocate some 3 billion lei (1.3 billion U.S. dollars) for the closing down of 88 mines starting 2008, reported on Monday the national Rompres news agency citing a government decision.

The needed funds for the shutdown and cleaning operations of the environment in the respective zones are to be allocated starting 2007, on the basis of some technical-economic analysis, according to the decision.

Since 1998, as many as 164 mines were shutdown and cleaning operations finalized in their case.

According to Romania's Energy Strategy project of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, needed investments in the mining field are estimated at some 2.2 billion euros (3 billion U.S. dollars), over2006-2020.
