BUCHAREST, Romania: A heat wave sweeping most of Romania left at least five people dead, the Health Ministry said Wednesday.
More than 8,500 people have needed emergency care since Monday, and some medical workers have been called back from vacations, Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu said. Additional ambulances have been dispatched as well, he said.
In Bucharest, authorities ordered all public pools open 24 hours to allow residents to cool down, and tents were set up in the city to provide pedestrians with water and shade. Temperatures have hovered around 38 Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) since Monday, and were expected to remain high for another week.
